What Are Lectins And Why Should You Avoid Them?

Image High-Lectin-foods.jpg

I have to admit I first heard about lectins a couple months ago and was a little confused since I had heard of the hormone Leptin many years ago and thought maybe this was a confused mispronunciation. Well I was wrong In fact Lectins are not really a hormone at all but is instead a protein that is in some beans and legumes and grains that works as a protector of them. I can imagine that for trees to exist with squirrels around the seeds would … [Read more...]

Snowflake Bentley

Image 01c.gif

This weekend was the Christmas open house at the Chapman Museum where I do my volunteer work.  Each year there is a different theme for the holidays. This year was featuring Snowflake Bentley, who was the first person to photograph snowflakes through a microscope. It seems appropriate for this post considering all the snow falling across the US. Bentley lived in Vermont, actually with his mother for his entire life.  He would go outside with a … [Read more...]

Votes for Women

This weather is crazy here! We’ve been in the 70s for the last few days and it doesn’t look to change. Saturday morning we did go out when it was colder just because we needed to ride early. We went up to the lake: It was really perfect riding weather. No breeze and no people!  It’s definitely a muted fall here. Riding with my favorite partner: I have to tell you – I do not know how John goes without sunglasses. He … [Read more...]

October PSA

Image IMG_5303b.jpg

October is breast cancer awareness month, even though every month you should be doing your own self exams. I had my mammogram this year. If you are not insured, you may be eligible for a free mammogram. You can find information on that at the National Breast Cancer Foundation where they can help you find a facility near you – or through the CDC program called NBCCEDP Early detection is key for the best outcome. I just realized that I … [Read more...]

I didn’t get a blooms post done on Friday. There wasn’t really anything new, but I did get some pictures of butterflies! I saw them out the window on Friday afternoon and ran out quick with my phone. There were 3 monarchs on my zinnias, which is really exciting for me! They are “new” butterflies, which you can tell because they aren’t tattered at all.  Monarchs only live for a few weeks except for the migration … [Read more...]

Saving the salamander

Image IMG_4316b.jpg

As you know, Wednesdays are Bagel Days!  We take this day to do a long ride as well — about 7 miles prior to breakfast and then 10 or 11 miles after breakfast. Gotta work off that bagel: We were on the post breakfast ride. John was riding in front of me and he looked back a couple of times. He said he saw something orange  in the shoulder and it was moving. He wanted to go check it out. We turned around and I spotted it in the middle of … [Read more...]

Volunteer work

Image img_4187.jpg

I’ve been doing my volunteer work at the Chapman museum in downtown Glens Falls for a year now. It doesn’t seem like that long, but that could be because it’s usually one shift a month. Most of the volunteers work the reception area. The museum recently installed a local information kiosk of sorts. It’s free to anyone to come in and learn about local history. Some interactive displays And there are about 8 … [Read more...]

Photo fun

I grew up in a photo family. My grandparents owned a photo developing business and so I’m sure you can imagine the number of photos our family has stored in boxes upon boxes. Transferring those photos to digital either requires sending out the negative and not getting it back or trying to take a picture of a picture, which doesn’t yield the best results. Enter google’s app PhotoScan and now I can get these pictures in a digital … [Read more...]

John’s birthday cake

Image IMG_4104b.jpg

Gratuitous food post here! John’s birthday was Friday, but the cake party wasn’t until Sunday when everyone could get together.  Since he did such an amazing job with my birthday cake, I had my work cut out to make one for him. He sent me this recipe from King Arthur Flour for a chocolate cake with mousse and raspberries as a starting point. He wanted strawberries instead of raspberries and I decided to use my standard chocolate … [Read more...]

Kids and Imagination: Knights and Templars and Monsters, Oh, MY!

Image IMG_8445.jpg

Reader/Eater My kids are big, big readers. It’s obviously something that was important to me, given my own love of reading, but it’s not always guaranteed, you know? My son has been a big fan of Riordan, Rowling, and C.S. Lewis, but has pretty much burned through their entire catalog. Then, in March, Medieval Times in New Jersey invited my family out for an evening of jousting and tourney-ing — and wine. Let’s not forget … [Read more...]
