Image family_festive.jpg

It’s THAT time of year again… Rampant commercialism. Frayed tempers. And of course, the inevitable family get-togethers. Now if you’re someone who savours the enchantment of the Festive Season and basks in the bosom of the extended family unit then this article is NOT for you. For the rest of you, you’re in good company. The Festive Season has always been a time of begrudging familial obligation for me and in my younger years I believed that I … [Read more...]

Balancing children’s needs vs spouse’s needs for New Moms

Image control_freak.jpg

Balancing motherhood and marriage is no easy task. It can feel easy, natural even, to get so swept up in the pleasures and routine of being a mother that your romantic relationship takes a back seat. Motherhood is in your blood, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be giving your husband your undivided attention as well. The balancing act may make you feel like stretch Armstrong, and for good reason! Who deserves your attention more, … [Read more...]

Image hotel-reading.jpg

[Warning: the reals + wrinkly stomach pics ahead. Proceed with caution] Hi friends! Thank you again for all of your kind wishes and comments on the post about my surgery. I was overwhelmed with all of your support and genuinely appreciate those who took time to leave a comment here, on Instagram, and Facebook. It can always been a little daunting to put yourself out there on social media, especially when you feel vulnerable, and you always wrap … [Read more...]

All the emotions

Image IMG_7858.JPG

I have nice things and sad things to share, and I'm debating which to write about first. So many things have happened recently that there is just too much to even put into words right now!I don't want to go into too much detail, but I had to call the police yesterday about a little boy who came over to our house looking for a glass of water to drink. He was only six years old, and locked out of his house (at 8:00 pm). There are a lot of … [Read more...]

A fun Sunday surprise!

Image fullsizeoutput_6e2a.jpeg

It has been a string of crazy weeks back to back. I am glad to be staying so busy, but boy, I am exhausted. I used to think that kids kept me busy when they were little--now I know just how busy things get when they're older.Noah went to church camp, and Eli had baseball literally every single day (including tournaments last Saturday and Sunday as well as this past Saturday and Sunday). Yesterday, their first game was at 11:45, and their … [Read more...]

Springing into summer

Image 09-01-1991-666.JPG

We have had a fun weekend! Nothing crazy eventful; but fun, nonetheless. On Friday, Jerry, the kids, and I all had eye exam appointments. It was Jerry's first-ever eye exam, which I thought was just crazy! He's 36 years old, and had never had his eyes checked. The kids had never been to an eye doctor, either, but Noah started complaining about not being able to read the blackboard at school, so I knew it was time they went.I got glasses … [Read more...]

Livi [at Disney World]: “I don’t miss home at all. We can just live here, ok?” “If you were a donut, I would eat you… and no one would ever see you again.” (Replaceable by a donut. Cool, haha) Livi: “Do you think the fish can hear us talking about them?” Me: “Yes, I think fish can hear everything. You think they understand English?” Livi: “Oh yes. Fish understand all the languages.” Livi: “Mom, when you were … [Read more...]

A fun zoo outing (and comparison photos)

Image fullsizeoutput_5be0.jpeg

On Saturday, we were invited to go to the zoo with the company Jerry works for. Once in a while, they'll host a fun outing somewhere, and this year, they chose the Detroit Zoo. They actually rented out the entire zoo just for employees and their families! The zoo normally closes at 5:00 pm, and our event started at 6:00--so we had the whole zoo to ourselves. Usually (well, almost always), I regret going to the zoo. It's always miserably … [Read more...]

It's been a whileAs it seems, my last post about progress, not perfection allowed my heart and mind to take a step back from BUSY and just proceed to drink in a summer of changes at home, in my job and in my perspective. All good things, I assure you. Here's a QUICK rundown of the new items: We got a dog, Rascal I am NEARLY through my first go at the 12 steps of Celebrate recovery I have learned that I have a GARDENERS heart I have upped (as I … [Read more...]

It’s been three years…

Image IMG_3940.JPG

Well, that was a fun weekend!I really didn't have many plans, but Jerry and I hosted a party on Saturday night, so we stayed very busy getting ready for that, and then recovering all day yesterday ;) On Friday, we spent the whole day cleaning the house--so fun, right? BUT, it felt sooo good going to bed on Friday knowing that my house was crazy clean. There is nothing more motivating to clean than expecting company--I really ought to plan a … [Read more...]

Mother’s Intuition

Image IMG_3852.JPG

As I mentioned yesterday, I had a bit of an eventful weekend. I actually thought it was over, and then yesterday everything escalated. It all started on Friday. I had plans to go out for martinis with Jessica, Renee, and Rachael for Jessica's birthday (I'm still not drinking for a little while, but I planned to get a mocktail or something). My kids were going to stay the night at my parents' house, since my parents hadn't seen them … [Read more...]

Wednesday Weigh-in: Starting Anew

Image fullsizeoutput_da03.jpeg

This week has felt so messed up. My kids didn't have school on Monday for Presidents' Day, so that made yesterday feel like Monday. I was so sure it was Monday all day long! But today feels like it should be Friday ;)Eli had an appointment at Children's Hospital in Detroit yesterday, so he got to play hooky from school. I was concerned about his legs, because he has joint pain, so I took him to a pediatric orthopedist. The doctor said … [Read more...]

Sickness remedies for little ones

Image sickness-remedies-for-little-ones.jpg

P is officially over the virus funk she had a couple of weeks ago, and has been back to her spunky self. Having a virus is the worst, even as an adult, so I always feel terrible when the girls are sick. We spend a lot of time snuggling and taking it easy until they’re feeling better. P wanted to be held nonstop, which I love, but since she’s almost 30 lbs, my right bicep is bulging. We don’t have much furniture in her room (changing table + … [Read more...]

Hello, Year 36

Image IMG_4325.JPG

In case you haven't noticed, I've finally picked up the posting frequency on my blog--I hope this means that my new antidepressant is working! I haven't felt a huge difference in my mood, but I've definitely felt a subtle, "Huh, I don't feel as sad today" or "I feel kind of energetic today". I've been making more plans, too, which is another sign it may be helping. I still don't feel back to … [Read more...]

Ground Turkey and Cabbage with Spicy Peanut Sauce (recipe)

Image IMG_2531.JPG

This is going to be a very long, boring post about my day yesterday. I am posting a recipe at the end, so you can skip down to that if you'd like ;)Well, it's only been a few days of consciously working on changing my eating habits again, but so far, so good. I have no idea if it's working, because I have no scale right now; but I'm eating on my regular schedule, and I'm tracking my calories.Yesterday, nothing seemed to be … [Read more...]

14-month old favorite foods and snack ideas

Image 14-month-old-favorite-foods-and-snack-ideas.png

are getting a little stagnant around here. I recently got a comment asking for some ideas to feed a 14-month old toddler. I’m happy to share some of our faves and also get some of your ideas! While Miss P is a blast to eat with, and loves food (she’ll “MMMM!!!” enthusiastically), we get stuck in the same things over here. I’m excited to switch it up a little bit! Here are some of P’s 14-month faves: Breakfast: I’ll almost always give her a … [Read more...]

Happy 5th birthday to you

Image newborn-livi.jpg

It’s so hard to believe that 5 years ago, we were back at home from the hospital. It was a beautiful blur of birth and recovery, and we were starting to get to know the newest addition to the family. So many times since that day, I’ve told myself, “I can’t believe she’s really here.” Still she continues to amaze me, years later, and I have a feeling it will keep happening. 5 years ago, it was burp cloths and sleep schedules. Morning snuggles, … [Read more...]
